Established hub or growth district
Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO) is a technology park and free zone on the eastern side of the city, with a residential community that has had time to settle. It has apartment buildings, townhouses and villas, with shops, schools and services spread through it.
Dubai South is a large district in the south of Dubai around Al Maktoum International Airport and next to Expo City Dubai. It includes residential neighbourhoods of apartments, townhouses and villas, many of them newer, within a wider plan for logistics, aviation and business. Our Dubai South guide and Dubai Silicon Oasis guide give the detail.
Housing stock and family life
DSO has a mature mix of older and newer apartment buildings plus established villa and townhouse clusters. Quality varies with age, so inspect carefully. Dubai South has more recent stock, with ongoing launches and handovers, and a more uniform, modern product.
DSO suits families who want services in place today, including schools and supermarkets nearby. Dubai South suits families with a connection to the area, such as work at the airport or in Expo City Dubai, who are comfortable with a community that is still filling in. Dubai South is close to Emirates Road and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, with Expo City Dubai nearby, but it is a long drive to the older city centre.
DSO has community malls, supermarkets, parks and the free zone's business facilities. Dubai South's amenities are growing, with retail and leisure being added as neighbourhoods complete.
